Marriage License Overview
Couples who plant to apply for a marriage license should remember to:
- Appear in person at the clerk's office
- Complete the application
- Bring valid state/government issued photo ID
- Be prepared to provide social security numbers
- Pay the marriage license fee
Fees & Discounts
The fee for a Florida marriage license is $93.50. However, couples who attend an approved premarital course qualify for a $32.50 discount, which reduces the fee to $61.00. There is also a 3-day waiting period between the time a license is issued and when it becomes effective for use. Couples who have taken a premarital course can skip the waiting period and be married as early as the day the license is issued. To take advantage of these discounts, the couple must provide the clerk's office with the certificate of completion when they apply for their license.
Marriage License Use & Restrictions
There is a 3-day waiting period if either individual is a Florida resident. If both people are non-Florida residents, there is not a waiting period. Marriage licenses expire 60 days after the issue date, so couples must solemnize their marriage within that time. If the license is not used before it expires, the couple will need to reapply to get a new one before they can be married. Following the ceremony, the couple must return the license to the clerk's office within 10 days for recording.
