Online Premarital Counseling Course FAQ's

1. How does this course work?

2. Do I really need to take a premarital course?
A premarital course helps couples get ready for the big life changes that happen after marriage, and can reduce chances of divorce by up to 30%. In addition to that, when you take our course, you'll be able to get a $25 discount on your marriage license and skip the 3-day marriage license waiting period. It's a triple win!

3. How do I skip the Florida marriage license waiting period?
Take an approved premarital course! Our course is approved in all 67 Florida counties, so you can be confident that our course will work for you. In most cases, you can immediately print your certificate of completion out as soon as you complete the course. Then, all you have to do is take it with you when you go to purchase your marriage license.

4. I heard I could get a discount on my marriage license with this course, is that true?
Absolutely! In addition to skipping the 3-day marriage license waiting period, Florida residents can also receive a $25 discount on their marriage license when they show our premarital course certificate of completion to their county clerk.

5. My fiancé is currently in another city/state, can we still take this online premarital counseling course?
Of course! Even when separated by distance, you can complete the course together and have a great experience. However, we don’t encourage more than one person to log into the same account at a given time. Instead, we recommend talking to your significant other via phone, Skype or Google Hangouts. If you choose to use Skype or Google Hangouts (both free), you will have the ability to share your screen with the other person so you can both view the course and videos together.

6. How long will it take for me to get my certificate of completion?
For most counties, you will be able to immediately print your certificate from the course dashboard as soon as you have spent at least 4 hours in the course. However, few counties require an original certificate. If you intend to get your marriage license in any of the following counties, we will mail your original certificate to you:

  • Dixie
  • Hardee
  • Levy
  • Taylor

7. Do I have to get my marriage license in the county that I live in?
No. You can get your marriage license in any Florida county and be married anywhere in Florida. If you are in a time crunch and the county you intended to get a marriage license from requires the original, you can always choose to get your marriage license from a different county.

8. Do we have to take the course in one sitting?
No. You can take a break whenever you want. We'll save how much time you've spent in the course, as well as where you left off. We made the course to be flexible so you can work it into your schedule.

9. How do I get my marriage license? What do I need to bring to the courthouse?
We get it, it can be a little intimidating. Here's a helpful video from the Orange County Courthouse. Even if your county doesn't offer an online option to submit your information before you go, the process is the same throughout the state. You will need to both be present and provide your photo ID (driver's license, passport or military ID) and your social security number. If you have been married before, you will also need to show proof of the dissolution of marriage.

10. Who is the course instructor?
Elizabeth Hekimian-Williams, LMHC, NCC, is a National Certified Counselor and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. She has over 20 years of professional experience providing counseling and other mental health services. Following many years of specialized work in domestic violence, batterer's intervention, conflict negotiation, and anger management, she refocused her work towards helping couples earlier on in their relationships by developing and offering a premarital preparation course that builds on aspects that have been associated with long-term marriage success.

11. Do we need to take the course together or separately?
You are required to take the class together. If you are separated over a distance, one person can login and the other can be involved by being present on the phone, Facetime, Skype, etc.

12. Does it matter whose information I put in when I register?
Nope! You will enter the name of your fiancee after you make your payment.

13. It asks me to pay before I put in my partner's information, so is this course meant for one of us or both of us? The course is meant to be taken together. After all, this is to get you both ready and excited about your marriage together!

14. Is it $24.99 for one of us or both of us?
You only need to pay one time and take the course together.

15. How long is the course?
The state requires that you spend 4 hours taking the course. You can start and stop anytime that you want, so it will fit into your schedule. You can also choose which chapters you want to take to customize your experience -- just as long as you spend at least 4 hours in the program and complete the little quiz at the end.

16. Is there a test in the course? Is it hard?
There is a short, 10 question completion quiz at the end of the course that you must take with your fiancee. It is multiple-choice, and the questions tell you where you can find the answer if you have any trouble. There isn't any stress involved! :)
