Marriage License Overview

Couples planning on applying for their marriage license must:

  • Appear in person and complete the marriage license application using Sarasota county's e-Marriage Self-Service Kiosk
  • Be sure to bring:
    • Valid photo ID
    • Social security number
    • Marriage license fee

Fees & Discounts

The cost for a marriage license is $93.50 unless the couples attend an approved premarital course. Completing a premarital class on the Sarasota county list will give the couple a $32.50 discount on the license fee, which reduces the total cost to $61.00. The certificate of completion must be present during the application process.

Marriage License Use & Restrictions

There is a 3-day waiting period that begins once a marriage license has been issued for Florida residents. If both individuals are non-Florida residents, there is not a waiting period and the effective date is the same as the issue date. Couples cannot be married until the effective date. Florida resident couples can waive the waiting period with the completion of an approved premarital course. To skip the wait, both individuals must complete the course. Marriage licenses expire after 60 days have passed from the issue date. If the license has not been used by that time, it will expire and the couple will need to reapply to get a new one. The license must be returned to the clerk's office within 10 days following the ceremony.

Ceremonies at the Clerk's Office

Couples that prefer to be married by a Clerk of the Court may do so for an additional $30 fee. If weather permits, the ceremony can be performed outside. There are several other locations where the ceremony can be done: Marriage Parlor or historic Courtroom of the 1920's Historic Courthouse in downtown Sarasota, or by the fountain at the R. L. Anderson Administration Center in Venice, FL.
