Marriage License Overview
If you plan to receive your marriage license, the couple will need to:
- Appear in person, together at the clerk's office
- Fill out a marriage license application
- Provide valid photo ID (driver's license, state issued ID, passport, etc.)
- Know their social security numbers (or alien registration number)
- Pay the marriage license fee
Fees & Discounts
The cost for the marriage license, including the state and county fees is $93.50. However, couples who attend an approved premarital course that is a minimum of 4 hours, receive a fee reduction and will only pay $61.00. To receive this discount, the couple must bring the premarital course certificate of completion with them when they apply for their license. This discount is only available for Florida residents.
Marriage License Use & Restrictions
The state of Florida has a 3-day waiting period between when a marriage license is issued and when it becomes effective. Couples cannot be legally married before the effective date. Couples who complete a premarital course will qualify to have the waiting period waived, as long as they bring the certificate of completion with them when they apply for their marriage license. Non-Florida residents do not have a waiting period. Once you receive your marriage license, it is valid for 60 days from the issue date and it must be returned to the clerk's office within 10 days after the ceremony is performed so it can be recorded.
