Marriage License Overview

If you plan to receive your marriage license in Charlotte county, the couple must:

  • Appear in person at one of the two branch offices (Punta Gorda or Murdock)
  • Present identification (photo ID, such as driver's license, military ID, or passport)
  • Be at least 18 years old (or be at least 16 and have written consent from a parent/guardian)
  • Be prepared to pay the marriage license fee

Fees & Discounts

The cost for the marriage license, including the state and county fees is $93.50. However, couples who attend an approved premarital course will only pay $61.00 and the mandatory 3-day waiting period for the marriage license will be waived. The fee must be paid in full. Charlotte county accepts payment in the form of cash, check, money order or credit card.

Marriage License Use & Restrictions

While the marriage license is issued immediately, there is a 3-day waiting period before the marriage license is effective and a couple may be married. Florida residents who complete an approved premarital course and present the certificate of completion to the clerk when they apply will receive a discount on the license and skip the marriage license waiting period. This allows the couple to be married immediately. Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days from the issue date, and must be returned to the clerk's office within 10 days after the marriage is performed.
